Privacy Policy

Effective Date: January 1, 2026

1. Introduction

Welcome to scanvin.app (“we,” “our,” or “us”). We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring the security of your data. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you visit our website and use our browser-based VIN scanning application (the “Service”).

By using scanvin.app, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

2. Data Controller

The Service is owned and operated by a private individual developer based in Poland. For all privacy-related inquiries, requests, or concerns, you can contact us directly via email:

3. VIN Scanner & Camera Access (How We Protect You)

Our core feature is the VIN Scanner, which utilizes your device’s camera to detect and read Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN).

  • Client-Side Processing: We use advanced AI technology (including Optical Character Recognition) that runs locally on your device (in your browser).
  • No Video Uploads: The video feed from your camera is never sent to our servers. We do not record, store, or view the live camera feed.
  • Data Minimization: Only the extracted text string (the alphanumeric VIN) is processed to check its validity and provide you with relevant history reports.

You may revoke camera access at any time through your browser settings.

4. Information We Collect

We collect different types of information to provide and improve our Service.

A. Non-Personal Data (Automatically Collected)

When you access the Service, we automatically collect certain technical data, including:

  • IP address (anonymized where possible).
  • Browser type and version.
  • Device type (Mobile/Desktop).
  • Operating system.
  • Time and date of your visit.

B. Personal Data (Voluntarily Provided)

  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number): While a VIN relates to a vehicle, it can be linked to an owner. We process the VIN you scan or type solely to generate search results or redirect you to history report providers.
  • Communication Data: If you contact us via email, we store your email address and message content to respond to your inquiry.

5. Analytics & Performance Monitoring

We use third-party tools to analyze traffic and ensure the stability of our website.

  • Google Analytics 4 (GA4): We use GA4 to understand how users interact with our content (e.g., which car models are most searched). GA4 uses cookies and collects IP addresses (anonymized).

  • Cloudflare RUM (Real User Monitoring): We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to measure the performance and speed of our website. This service is designed to be privacy-first and does not use client-side state (such as cookies) to track users across websites. It helps us optimize the loading times of our pages.

scanvin.app participates in affiliate marketing programs. This means:

  • We may earn a commission if you click on a link to a partner website and purchase a vehicle history report.
  • Data Transfer: When you click a “Check History” or “Buy Report” button, the detected VIN is passed to the partner’s website for your convenience.
  • Third-Party Privacy: Once you leave our website, we are not responsible for the privacy practices of our partners. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before making a purchase.

7. Cookies and Local Storage

We use Cookies and Local Storage technologies to enhance your experience.

  • Essential / Functional: We use your browser’s Local Storage to save your recent VIN scans locally on your device. This data persists only in your browser and is not synchronized to our database.
  • Analytical Cookies: Set by Google Analytics to track session duration and page views.

You can instruct your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, if you do not accept cookies, some parts of our Service may not function properly.

8. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical measures to protect your data. Our website uses SSL/TLS encryption (HTTPS) enforced by Cloudflare to ensure that all data transmitted between your browser and our servers is secure.

9. Your Rights (GDPR)

If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA), you have the following data protection rights:

  • The right to access: You can ask for copies of your personal data.
  • The right to rectification: You can ask us to correct inaccurate information.
  • The right to erasure: You can ask us to delete your personal data (“Right to be forgotten”), subject to certain legal exceptions.
  • The right to restrict processing: You can ask us to limit how we use your data.

To exercise these rights, please contact us at contact@scanvin.app.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the “Effective Date” at the top.
