Chassis Number Locations

Where to look: Open the driver’s door and locate the black manufacturer label on the B-pillar (the post between the front and rear doors), near the door latch mechanism.
Access: Easy access with the door fully open; labels can be scratched/peeling on high-mileage/fleet cars.
Note: This guide is written for LHD vehicles. On RHD cars, the door-jamb VIN label may be on the opposite side depending on market—if you don’t see it on the driver side, check the other front door opening.
Tip: Because the sticker has high contrast and often a barcode, scan it directly with your phone to avoid typing errors and to capture the full VIN instantly.

Where to look: From outside the car, look through the windshield at the driver’s side dashboard corner. The VIN is on a small black plate with white characters.
Access: Glare/reflections are common; outside dirt/leaves can block the view.
Note: Best checked in shade or indoors; reflections can make photos unreadable.
Tip: If glare keeps washing out the characters, capture it fast with the VIN scanner and reposition your body to block reflections while the OCR locks onto the text.

Where to look: Move the front passenger seat fully backward, remove any floor mat, then find the pre-cut carpet flap in the floor in front of the seat rails. Lift the flap—the VIN is stamped into the metal chassis cross-member underneath.
Access: More work: you must slide the seat, remove the mat, and lift the flap; lighting is poor due to shadows under the seat.
Note (important orientation rule): Check the front footwell floor (commonly on the passenger side for LHD vehicles, but check the driver side footwell if not found)—sources often mix up “right front seat” vs. “passenger seat” across LHD/RHD markets.
Tip: It’s dark and awkward to read down there—use the flashlight + OCR scanner so you don’t have to contort and manually write the stamped characters.

Where to look: Open the hood and inspect the firewall (metal partition between engine and cabin) or sometimes the right-side strut tower for a stamped VIN (varies by configuration).
Access: Often dirty/greasy and tight to reach; modern engine bays are crowded and plastic covers may hide the stamping.
Note: Don’t confuse engine number (on the engine block/crankcase) with the VIN (chassis number on body/firewall/floor).
Tip: If grime or faded stamping makes it hard to read, use High Contrast AI scanning so the camera can pick up shallow or dirty characters without guesswork.

Where to look: Turn ignition on and navigate: Service Menu → Vehicle Data (path can vary). Some vehicles also allow access via steering wheel button combinations to a workshop/dealer menu showing vehicle data including VIN.
Access: Not physically difficult, but menu/button sequences can be confusing if you don’t know the steps.
Note: Great for cross-checking, but for fraud detection you should still compare it to a physical stamped VIN (floor/firewall).
Tip: Use the screen VIN to verify what you scanned—scan the physical VIN with the app so you can quickly compare both without retyping.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

Windshield glare/reflections: Shoot at an angle, shade the glass with your body, and clean the outside lower corner before trying to read it.
Floor stamping hard to access: Slide the seat fully back, remove the mat, lift the carpet flap, and use extra light (phone flash) because it’s shadowed.
Sticker vs. stamped VIN: Door stickers can be replaced—always confirm the stamped floor/firewall VIN matches before buying or valuing the car.
