Where is the VIN number in Mercedes-Benz Klasa S (W221/V221)?

This guide shows the VIN (chassis number) locations on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class / Klasa S (W221/V221) produced between 2006–2007, including the quick-check stickers and the hidden stamped body VINs.

Chassis Number Locations

B-Pillar door jamb VIN label

• Where to look: Open the front door and look at the B-pillar/door jamb for a black manufacturer label with the VIN plus weights/paint/data.
• Access: Low difficulty. No tools needed. Easy to read, but the surface can reflect light.
• Note: On LHD cars it’s typically on the front left (driver) door jamb, but some cars also have a similar data label on the opposite side.
• Tip: If the label is reflecting sunlight, step into shade and scan the VIN directly with your phone so you don’t misread characters like B/8 or O/0.

Dashboard VIN plate (through windshield)

• Where to look: From outside the car, look through the lower corner of the windshield on the driver’s side for the VIN plate.
• Access: Low to Medium difficulty. No tools, but reflections and a dirty windshield can block the view.
• Note: Best checked from outside in even lighting (overcast is ideal).
• Tip: When glare is bad, angle your phone slightly and capture it instantly using the VIN scanner instead of trying to copy it through glass.

Under rear seat / floor stamp (right side)

• Where to look: Go to the rear seat area (right side) and locate the pre-cut flap in the carpet on the vertical carpet section just below the rear seat cushion. Lift/pry the flap to reveal the VIN stamped into the vertical cross-member under the rear bench.
• Access: Medium difficulty. You’ll be crouched low, and it’s dark under the seat. You may need to hold the flap open with one hand while reading.
• Note: The report shows it on the right rear side. For LHD cars, that’s commonly the passenger-side rear seating area—check the opposite side only if you don’t find it there.
• Tip: This spot is usually shadowed—use your phone light and scan it with Flashlight + OCR so you don’t have to write it down in an awkward position.

Engine bay (firewall/bulkhead stamp)

• Where to look: Open the hood and look at the rear of the engine bay on the firewall/bulkhead. There’s typically a cutout/opening in the plastic cowl/trim that lets you see the VIN stamped into the metal.
• Access: Medium difficulty. You’ll need to lean over the engine; the stamp can be dusty/grimy and recessed.
• Note: Use a flashlight and wipe the area if it’s dirty—don’t confuse nearby casting numbers or part numbers with the VIN.
• Tip: If the characters are faint or dirty, wipe lightly and use High Contrast scanning to pull the VIN out of low-contrast metal stamping.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

• Can’t find the under-seat VIN: The carpet flap is easy to miss—feel along the vertical carpet panel below the rear seat cushion and lift the pre-cut section; use a flashlight because it’s dark down there.
• Firewall VIN is hard to read: Dust/grime and the recessed position hide the stamping—wipe the metal and change your viewing angle before assuming it’s missing.
• Sticker doesn’t “prove” the car: Door-jamb labels can be replaced—always cross-check the windshield VIN and a stamped body VIN before purchase/registration.
