Where is the VIN number in Audi A4 (B9 (8W))?

This guide shows you where to find the VIN (chassis number) on the Audi A4 B9 (8W) produced between 2016–2021, including the quickest “walk-up” VIN label and the stamped VIN in the engine bay.

Chassis Number Locations

1) VIN Sticker (Type Label) — B-Pillar / Door Sill

• Where to look: Open the front door and look at the lower B-pillar (the post between the front and rear doors) right by the door sill. The sticker includes the VIN plus other data (paint code/weights).
• Access: Low difficulty. No tools. You just need to crouch because it’s low to the ground.
• Note: The inspection video vehicle is RHD, showing the label on the right side. On many LHD (EU/US) cars you may find this label on the opposite side—if you don’t see it on one B-pillar, check the other.
• Tip: Because you’re bent down in an awkward position, scan it directly with your phone instead of copying characters by hand.

2) Stamped Chassis Number (VIN) — Right Front Strut Tower

• Where to look: Pop the hood and go to the right-hand suspension strut tower. The VIN is stamped into the metal on top of the tower, near the red jump-start terminal cover.
• Access: Low to Medium. It’s exposed, but it can be dusty/grimy, and the characters are dot-peened (made of small punched dots), which can be harder to read.
• Note: The report indicates the stamped VIN is located on the right strut tower; don’t translate this into “driver side” or “passenger side”—use vehicle left/right orientation.
• Tip: If the stamping is dirty or the dot-peen is faint, wipe it and then use High Contrast AI Mode to scan it so the characters stand out.

3) Engine Number — Top of Engine Block (Under Cover)

• Where to look: The engine number is indicated to be on the top/front area of the engine block, under the main plastic acoustic (“TFSI”) engine cover, near a sensor.
• Access: High difficulty. The number is physically covered unless you remove the plastic engine cover (typically held by grommets and pulls up). The inspection video does not show the digits.
• Note: This is not a good “quick check” location during a basic viewing because access depends on cover removal.
• Tip: If you do remove the cover and the area is shadowy/tight, scan it with your phone to avoid misreading characters in an awkward spot.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

• Dot-peened stamped VIN looks “blurred”: Scrub the area with a rag and use angled light (or your phone light) to create shadows that reveal the dots.
• Engine bay VIN is dirty/greasy: Clean first—oil film can hide the stamping and also confuses camera focus.
• Sticker vs stamped VIN mismatch: If the door-jamb label looks tampered with, always cross-check the stamped chassis VIN before buying.
