Where is the VIN number in Volkswagen Tiguan (Tiguan II [2016-2022])?

This guide shows you where to find the VIN (chassis number) on the Volkswagen Tiguan II, produced between 2016–2022—the same spots I check in the workshop for paperwork checks, inspections, and VIN verification.

Chassis Number Locations

B-Pillar (Door Jamb) Sticker

• Where to look: Open the front door and inspect the B-pillar/door jamb area for a black manufacturer label listing the VIN along with weight and paint information.
• Access: Easy access and usually clean; the high-contrast print makes it straightforward to read.
• Note: On Tiguan II, the label is commonly found on the left B-pillar. On LHD cars that’s usually the driver side; on RHD cars it may be on the passenger side—so check the left B-pillar first.
• Tip: If you don’t want to misread characters (O/0, B/8), scan it directly with your phone so the VIN is captured accurately from the label in one shot.

Windshield (Dashboard)

• Where to look: From outside the car, look through the lower corner of the windshield on the left side (dashboard VIN plate visible under the glass).
• Access: Generally easy to see, but glare/reflections or dirt/snow on the outside of the glass can block it.
• Note: This is a standard global VIN position and is usually the fastest “walk-up check.”
• Tip: If the windshield is reflecting the sky or lights, capture it with the free VIN reader—a quick camera scan beats squinting and typing it in wrong.

Engine Bay (Chassis Stamping) – Right Side

• Where to look: Open the hood and locate the VIN stamped into the metal chassis rail/inner fender area on the vehicle’s right side (when you’re facing the engine from the front, you’ll be looking to your left). It’s shown near the coolant expansion tank and close to the washer fluid filler neck area along the metal ridge.
• Access: Moderate difficulty. It may be dirty/greasy, the stamping can be low-contrast (painted over), and engine bay lighting is often poor.
• Note: This stamping location remains on the vehicle’s right-side inner fender area regardless of LHD/RHD.
• Tip: After wiping the area, use High Contrast AI Mode to scan the stamped VIN—it helps pull characters out of faint, painted, or grimy stampings.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

• Windshield glare/reflections: Change your viewing angle, shade the VIN area with your hand, or scan it with your phone to avoid transcription mistakes.
• Engine bay stamping hard to read: Scrub the stamping lightly (rag + mild degreaser), then use a flashlight at a low angle to create shadows that reveal the characters.
• Sticker validity warning: If the B-pillar label looks tampered with (bubbled edges, mismatched font, fresh adhesive), verify the VIN against the windshield plate and the engine-bay stamping before trusting it.
